Black & Decker VPX3101 Li-Ion VPX Inverter

I’m an electrical engineer and I looked at this inverter out of curiosity…
After reading the description, it appears that you need to buy at least two additional components: the 7 volt battery AND the charger [they are listed on the same page as additonal items to buy].
By the time one buys:
1) this inverter [the purpose of this is to just translate the battery power into AC or USB output so you can power up devices when you do not have access to regular power outlets...eg, camping]…and it probably will only be practical for USB and VERY low wattage AC power needs…
2) the charger Black & Decker VPX0320 Dual Port Charger and
3)the battery pack(s) Black & Decker VPX0111 7-Volt VPX Battery Pack [the charger charges the battery pack which then plugs into the inverter…you will have to spend about $60!
They don’t make it very clear…you would be better off buying an inverter that plugs into you car’s cigarette lighter…unless you already have the rest of the system…hope this helps!
Overall this was a Good buy for $15. I bought this to charge my iPhone and my camera batteries while camping. I had already purchased the Starter set for about $50 (Black & Decker VPX903X1 Li-Ion VPX Starter Set with Power Screwdriver, Cut Saw, Flashlight, and VPX Battery with Charger) so this made the most sense as a portable charging option. I need to do some more testing but it seems to work well enough and I don’t have to set up solar cells or use a hand crank. Had this come with the starter set I would be much happier. The quality on these products seem pretty low, but at the discount prices it gets the job done.
Good product and it’s great to have on hand on the road or in a power outage.
This little VPX Inverter will operate most ELECTRIC RAZORS and I found it WILL recharge the iphone if you plug the iphone charger into the 115 volt port and forget about using the USB port.
Two thumbs up !
Works well for its purpose. Have used to charge cell phone and iPod touch. Found out that cannot charge iPod from USB port because power draw is too high. May be able to use USB for charging smaller items. Works well for price.
